Zorzal de los bosques oscuros y húmedos de coníferas del noroeste del Pacífico, con un diseño de pizarra y naranja tostado y una banda negra en el pecho. Pasa la mayor parte del tiempo en el suelo del bosque, removiendo la hojarasca en busca de insectos en verano y pasando a la fruta caída y las bayas en invierno. Su canto es una única nota larga y zumbante en un solo tono, luego una pausa y después otra en un tono distinto, que atraviesa el bosque húmedo mejor de lo que cabría esperar.

Breeds in the moist Douglas fir forest of the Pacific Northwest, nesting in the understory and feeding on the litter beneath it. The tie is to the forest the tree builds rather than to the tree itself.

The thrush forages on the floor of moist Pacific-Northwest conifer forest, and sword fern is the dominant understory it moves through; the fern gives cover, not food. It is recorded here as co-occurrence because the sources support that and nothing stronger.
Distribución
Cría en bosques húmedos de coníferas desde Alaska por la costa del Pacífico hasta el norte de California y hacia el interior hasta el norte de las Rocosas, y pasa el invierno más al sur y a menor altitud por los estados del Pacífico. Algunas aves se desvían muy al este de su área en invierno, y así es como aparece en comederos de todo el continente en los años de irrupción.
