GRIN Taxonomy

Primary source
USDA Agricultural Research Service, National Plant Germplasm System
The taxonomic database of the USDA’s Germplasm Resources Information Network: accepted names, synonyms and common names, and a native, naturalized and cultivated distribution given country by country and, for North America, state by state, each line tied to the flora or checklist it comes from. It also records economic uses and flags such as weed or poison, with their references.
What you'll find here
Accepted name and synonyms
Native and naturalized distribution by state and country
The regional flora behind each distribution line
Weed and poison flags with references
Specific data we draw from it: accepted taxonomy, native, naturalized and cultivated distribution, distribution references, economic uses.
Good to know
Referenced distribution. Each distribution line names its flora; where GRIN and another checklist disagree on whether a plant is native somewhere, say which source says what.
How to cite this source
Cite the taxon’s own page (taxonomydetail?id=<n>) and, for a distribution claim, the flora GRIN gives for that line.
License
U.S. federal government work, public domain; attribution is still expected.
Caution
A taxonomic and germplasm reference, not a garden guide: it gives no cultivation advice, and its weed and poison flags summarise other works rather than assess risk.
