The Tehuacan Valley matorral is a desert and xeric shrubland ecoregion in eastern central Mexico, occupying the Tehuacan Valley and adjacent valleys across parts of the states of Puebla, Oaxaca, and Tlaxcala. Its vegetation is classic Mexican matorral dominated by columnar and other cacti, including the Mexican organ pipe cactus, barrel cactus, blue myrtle-cactus, and prickly pear, alongside oak scrub at higher elevations. The climate is semi-dry and hot with summer rains, the valleys staying arid because they sit in the rain shadow of the surrounding mountain ranges. It is one of Mexico's great centers of plant diversity, with more than 2,700 plant species of which roughly 30 percent are endemic, and it holds more Agave species than any other arid environment in the country; much of it is safeguarded by the Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Biosphere Reserve. For gardeners, the region is the native home of many familiar drought-tolerant ornamentals, being a documented center of diversity for Agave, Salvia, and cacti.
