The Southwest Arabian montane woodlands and grasslands occupy the high country of the southwestern Arabian Peninsula, spanning the Asir Mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia and the Western Highlands of Yemen, part of the Sarawat range running parallel to the Red Sea. Lying mostly above 2,000 meters and rising to Jabal an-Nabi Shu'ayb, the Arabian Peninsula's highest peak, it supports evergreen woodland of wild olive (Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata) and Tarchonanthus camphoratus, grading into higher cloud forest of African juniper (Juniperus procera) and Euryops arabicus on wetter, north-facing slopes. Monsoon-influenced moisture and cloud cover set these uplands apart from the arid lowlands around them. The woodlands shelter a distinctive fauna, including endemic birds such as the Yemen warbler, Yemen thrush, and Yemen linnet that depend on juniper berries, alongside the endemic Asir magpie, while the critically endangered Arabian leopard persists in the Asir escarpment. For gardeners, native flora here also includes ornamental genera such as Rosa abyssinica, Rubus, and Alchemilla.
