Romania

Romania: 6 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Six ecoregions divide Romania along its arc of mountains and plains. The Carpathian montane forests, a temperate conifer belt, form the core, wrapped by Central European mixed forests in Transylvania and the north, Pannonian mixed forests in the western lowlands, and Balkan mixed forests toward the south. East of the mountains the country opens into the East European forest steppe and, along the Black Sea and lower Danube, the Pontic steppe, both rated Nature Imperiled. That layout gives Romania a continental climate with real winters everywhere, humid and forested in the hills and mountains, drier and more drought-prone on the steppe plains of the southeast. Planting follows the same divide: woodland species thrive in the Carpathian orbit, while the steppe zone rewards deep-rooted, dry-summer-tolerant choices.
