Republic of the Congo

Republic of the Congo: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

The Republic of the Congo sits wholly within the Congo Basin's forest world, its four ecoregions all Afrotropic and all warm and humid. Northwest Congolian lowland forests cover the northern interior, giving way in the northeast to the Western Congolian swamp forests along the great rivers; the Congolian coastal forests reach the Atlantic side, and the Western Congolian forest-savanna breaks the canopy across the south. Three of the four are tropical moist broadleaf forest, so year-round warmth and abundant rain are the baseline, with the forest-savanna belt introducing a more seasonal, grass-and-woodland character. For planting, moisture is rarely the constraint; drainage is, especially toward the swamp forests, and the savanna zone is where fire and a marked dry spell enter the picture.
