Landscape and climate

Fifty-seven ecoregions across two realms make China one of the most climatically complete countries on Earth. The Indomalayan south carries tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, from Hainan Island monsoon rain forests to the Jian Nan subtropical evergreen forests, while the Palearctic bulk of the country runs through temperate forests like the Changbai Mountains mixed forests, Qin Ling Mountains deciduous forests, and Hengduan Mountains subalpine conifer forests, the Mongolian-Manchurian grassland, a vast belt of Tibetan Plateau alpine shrublands and meadows, and true deserts like the Taklimakan desert and Eastern Gobi desert steppe. For gardeners this means nearly every hardiness situation exists somewhere in China, and Chinese flora supplies garden plants worldwide; the practical question is always which China a plant comes from - a shrub from the Sichuan Basin evergreen broadleaf forests and one from the Alashan Plateau semi-desert want opposite conditions.
