Laos

Laos: 8 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

All eight of Laos's ecoregions are tropical broadleaf forest, six of them moist and two dry. Northern Indochina subtropical forests cover the largest share, joined by the Luang Prabang montane rain forests, Northern Thailand-Laos moist deciduous forests, and the Northern Annamites rain forests and Southern Annamites montane rain forests along the Vietnamese border. Southward, the Central Indochina dry forests and Southeast Indochina dry evergreen forests bring a pronounced monsoon dry season to the Mekong lowlands. The climate story is warm and monsoonal throughout, moderated by altitude in the north and along the Annamites. For growers that means a forest-garden palette: evergreen and semi-evergreen trees in the uplands, deciduous dry-forest species toward the south, and everywhere a planting calendar built around the wet season.
