Gabon

Gabon: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Equatorial forest defines Gabon. The Northwest Congolian lowland forests cover the interior and the Congolian coastal forests run the Atlantic side, both tropical moist broadleaf ecoregions with room to reach half protection. The Western Congolian forest-savanna, ranked Nature Imperiled, brings a grassland mosaic into the mix, and the Central African mangroves fringe the estuaries and lagoons. The character is hot, humid, and green year-round, with rainfall rather than temperature setting the calendar. Rainforest trees, shade-layer shrubs, and moisture-loving understory plants are the natural planting vocabulary across most of the country; the forest-savanna zone opens space for grasses and light-demanding species, and the coast belongs to salt-tolerant mangrove systems.
