Egypt
Egypt: 10 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Desert defines Egypt: of its ten ecoregions, most belong to the deserts and xeric shrublands biome, from the vast South and East Sahara deserts and the North Saharan Xeric Steppe and Woodland to the Arabian desert, Red Sea coastal desert, and Red Sea-Arabian Desert shrublands east of the Nile. The exceptions are telling - the Nile Delta flooded savanna and Saharan halophytics mark the river and its salt-affected margins, and a strip of Mediterranean dry woodlands and steppe follows the northern coast. Planting in Egypt is therefore a story of water: irrigated ground along the Nile and Delta supports intensive cultivation, the Mediterranean fringe allows drought-adapted woodland species, and everywhere else calls for true desert plants and careful attention to salinity.
