Democratic Republic of the Congo: 16 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Sixteen ecoregions meet in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, split between the great equatorial rainforest and the savannas that ring it. The Northeast, Northwest, and Central Congolian lowland forests form the heart of Africa's largest tropical moist broadleaf forest block, while wide belts of forest-savanna (the Northern Congolian Forest-Savanna, Southern Congolian forest-savanna, and Western Congolian forest-savanna) and the Central Zambezian and Angolan wet miombo woodlands take over to the north and south. In the east the Albertine Rift montane forests climb into cooler, wetter highlands, and the Zambezian flooded grasslands add a wetland dimension. Planting conditions range accordingly, from ever-wet rainforest to strongly seasonal savanna with a pronounced dry season, with the montane east offering the only genuinely cool growing climates in the country.
