Colombia

Colombia: 29 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Twenty-nine ecoregions converge on Colombia, nineteen of them tropical moist broadleaf forests, from the Chocó-Darién and Magdalena-Urabá lowlands to the montane forests of all three Andean cordilleras and the Amazonian Caqueta and Napo forests. Beyond the wet forests sit five dry-forest ecoregions, the Llanos savanna, two páramo ecoregions including the Northern Andean páramo, the Guajira-Barranquilla xeric scrub, and the South American Pacific mangroves. The result is a country where climate is organized vertically and by rain shadow rather than by season: perpetually humid lowlands, cooler cloud-forest belts, cold high-elevation páramo, and pockets of genuine aridity in the inter-Andean valleys and the Guajira. Planting choices track elevation and moisture band, and the dry-forest valleys, several ranked Nature Imperiled, reward drought-tolerant native palettes.
