Residente em florestas de coníferas e em florestas mistas de coníferas e carvalhos, do sul do Alasca pela costa do Pacífico e pelas montanhas interiores do oeste da América do Norte até o México e a América Central. A cor da cabeça varia geograficamente: as aves costeiras a têm pardo-enegrecida e as do interior são mais azuis, com estrias brancas acima do olho.
