Feather reed grass
Calamagrostis × acutiflora
A cool-season ornamental grass grown for its upright line: a narrow clump of glossy green leaves with stiff flower stems to about 5 feet, carrying feathery, purplish plumes in early summer that tighten into narrow, buff-colored spires and stand through most of the winter. It is a hybrid of two Eurasian reed grasses, Calamagrostis arundinacea and Calamagrostis epigejos, that turns up now and then in the wild in Europe. The garden plant is the cultivar 'Karl Foerster', which sets no viable seed, so it stays where it is planted.
