Porte-queue noir aux ailes postérieures bleu irisé ou bleu-vert ; les larves sont spécialistes des plantes de la famille des Lauracées (Lauraceae), principalement le lindera aromatique (Lindera benzoin) et le sassafras (Sassafras albidum). La chenille imite un petit serpent lorsqu'elle est menacée - repliant l'avant de son corps et déployant de grands faux ocelles - ce qui constitue l'une des défenses les plus spectaculaires de chenille dans les forêts de l'est de l'Amérique du Nord.
