La loba (Maniola jurtina) es una de las mariposas de pastizal más abundantes de Europa, y se distribuye desde Europa al sur de los 62° N por el norte de África, Asia Menor, Irak y hacia el este hasta Irán. Los machos son de un pardo oscuro con un pequeño ocelo apical en el ala anterior; las hembras son más vistosas, con una amplia mancha anaranjada leonada que rodea un ocelo mayor. Los adultos liban en centáureas (Centaurea), cardos (Cirsium), escabiosas (Scabiosa, Succisa) y zarzas (Rubus), mientras que las orugas se alimentan de noche de diversas gramíneas de hoja fina, como festucas (Festuca), pojas (Poa) y dáctilo (Dactylis glomerata). Los jardines y cementerios con hierba alta sin segar y zonas abiertas de flores silvestres sostienen ambas fases de su vida.
