Turkey
Turkey: 14 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Fourteen ecoregions meet in Turkey, and the split tells the story: six temperate broadleaf and mixed forest ecoregions, four Mediterranean forest, woodland and scrub ecoregions, three steppe grasslands, and one temperate conifer belt. The humid Euxine-Colchic broadleaf forests and Northern Anatolian conifer and deciduous forests line the Black Sea flank, Aegean and southern coasts carry sclerophyllous and mixed Mediterranean woodland, and the interior holds the Central Anatolian steppe and the Eastern Anatolian montane steppe. Gardeners effectively work in three climates: a mild, wet north suited to broadleaf woodland plants, a summer-dry coastal south built for drought-adapted Mediterranean shrubs and conifers, and a cold, dry continental plateau where steppe grasses and tough deciduous trees set the palette. Notably, eleven of the fourteen ecoregions here rank Nature Imperiled.
