Landscape and climate

Tunisia reads as the Mediterranean shading into the Sahara. Along the northern coast and hills, Mediterranean woodlands and forests and a strip of Mediterranean conifer and mixed forests give classic winter-rain, summer-drought conditions; behind them the Mediterranean dry woodlands and steppe form the semi-arid middle of the country. Southward the North Saharan Xeric Steppe and Woodland takes over, and the Saharan halophytics mark the salt flats of the chott depressions. Planting logic follows that gradient exactly. The north supports the full Mediterranean garden repertoire - olives, pines, evergreen oaks, aromatic shrubs - the steppe belt suits hardy dryland species, and the south is true desert gardening where only deeply drought-adapted plants persist without irrigation.
