Togo: 3 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Three ecoregions stack across Togo's narrow north-south length, tracing West Africa's rainfall gradient in miniature. The far south touches the Eastern Guinean forests, the region's tropical moist broadleaf forest zone; the middle belt lies in the Guinean forest-savanna, where woodland and grassland interleave; and the north opens into the West Sudanian savanna, drier and more sharply seasonal. Warmth is constant, so the working variable is the length and reliability of the rains, which shorten steadily northward. Southern plantings can lean on forest-zone moisture; northern ones need savanna toughness and a plan for the long dry season. Both savanna ecoregions are ranked Nature Imperiled, a reminder that farming and fire have already reshaped most of this landscape.
