The Gambia

The Gambia: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

The Gambia threads along its river through two Afrotropic savanna ecoregions, both classed as imperiled. Most of the country lies in the Guinean forest-savanna, the transitional mosaic where West Africa's savanna grades toward forest, while the West Sudanian savanna reaches the drier inland east. The shared biome is tropical grassland and savanna, which sets the terms: hot year-round, a single rainy season, and a long dry season that everything woody must survive. The river corridor and the moister forest-savanna mosaic support denser tree growth than the open Sudanian ground upstream. For planting, that favors savanna trees and drought-resilient shrubs generally, with the western, wetter end of the country able to carry more forest-edge species.
