Suriname

Suriname: 5 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Suriname sits almost entirely within tropical moist broadleaf forest: the Guianan lowland moist forests carry most of the country, the Guianan Highlands moist forests and Pantepui forests & shrublands rise over the interior, and the Guianan freshwater swamp forests line the wet coastal plain. The one departure is the Guianan savanna, a tropical grassland ecoregion. Protection is a defining trait here; the Highlands, Pantepui, and savanna ecoregions all rank Half Protected. The climate character is uniformly hot and humid rainforest, with the meaningful gradients being drainage and elevation rather than temperature: swampy coastal soils, well-drained lowland forest, and cooler upland forest. Plants suited to constant warmth, high humidity, and heavy rainfall define the palette, with the savanna belt favoring grasses and open-country species on poorer soils.
