Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Rainforest is the whole story in the Solomon Islands: both of its ecoregions are tropical moist broadleaf forests. The Solomon Islands rain forests cover the main archipelago, while the Vanuatu rain forests reach the country's southeastern islands; both belong to the Australasian realm and both are judged able to reach half protection. The climate is uniformly hot, humid, and wet, so the meaningful gardening variables are local: coastal exposure, soil, and shade rather than season. Moisture-loving trees, palms suited to island conditions, and a dense understory of shade-tolerant plants define the natural palette. With no dry-forest or savanna ecoregion in the mix, drought tolerance matters far less here than tolerance of constant warmth, heavy rain, and salt-laden coastal wind.
