Slovenia: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Slovenia gathers four ecoregions into a small compass. The Alps conifer and mixed forests cover the northwest highlands; the Dinaric Mountains mixed forests run down the karst spine; the eastern lowlands open into the Pannonian mixed forests; and a sliver of the Illyrian deciduous forests brings the Mediterranean biome to the short coast. Temperate broadleaf and mixed forest is the default character - this is deeply forested country - but the corners diverge sharply: alpine cold and snow in the northwest, continental seasons in the Pannonian east, and mild, drier Mediterranean conditions near the Adriatic. Gardeners can face genuinely different climates within an hour's drive, so siting by ecoregion matters more here than the country's size would suggest; beech-and-conifer woodland sets the native baseline for most of it.
