Serbia

Serbia: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

All four of Serbia's ecoregions are temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, but they split the country cleanly. North of the Danube and Sava, the Pannonian mixed forests cover the flat, farmed Vojvodina plain; south of them the Balkan mixed forests take most of central Serbia's hills, with the Dinaric Mountains mixed forests in the southwest and the Half Protected Rodope montane mixed forests reaching the southeast. That makes Serbia thoroughly deciduous-forest country: continental climate, cold winters, warm summers, and a natural cover of oak, beech, and mixed hardwoods nearly everywhere, shading cooler and moister with elevation in the south. Gardeners can plant to a classic Central European temperate palette, choosing tougher, more drought-tolerant selections on the open Pannonian plain and mountain species in the Dinaric and Rodope uplands.
