Senegal: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Savanna in three registers, plus a mangrove coast - that is Senegal. The Sahelian Acacia savanna spans the dry north, the West Sudanian savanna the wetter center, and the Guinean forest-savanna the moister south, a straightforward north-to-south rainfall gradient with progressively taller trees and longer growing seasons. Along the Casamance and Saloum estuaries, Guinean mangroves line the tidal channels. Everything grows on a single summer wet season; the difference between zones is how long it lasts. Northern planting means drought-dormant acacias and hardy shrubs, the Sudanian belt supports the classic parkland trees of West African farmland, and the Guinean south can carry a nearly forest-like canopy. Both Sudanian-Guinean ecoregions rate Nature Imperiled, reflecting how heavily settled this productive belt is.
