Samoa

Samoa: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Samoa lies entirely within the Samoan tropical moist forests, an Oceanian ecoregion of tropical moist broadleaf forest covering these high volcanic islands. Tall islands catch rain, and the classification reflects that: rain forest climbs from the coast into the interior uplands, with windward slopes wettest. The ecoregion's Nature Could Reach Half Protected tier suggests substantial forest still standing, particularly in the rugged interiors. The growing climate is warm, humid, and frost-free the year round, and volcanic soils are a genuine asset. Village gardens and plantations of breadfruit, coconut, and taro have long worked with these conditions; ornamental growers can add nearly any moist-tropical species, minding salt spray near shore and choosing non-invasive plants so cultivation does not creep into intact native forest.
