Portugal: 6 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Mainland Portugal is Mediterranean country with an Atlantic fringe. Three Mediterranean ecoregions - the Iberian sclerophyllous and semi-deciduous forests, the Southwest Iberian Mediterranean sclerophyllous and mixed forests, and the Northwest Iberian montane forests - cover most of it, giving the familiar regime of dry summers, wet mild winters, and evergreen oak-and-scrub vegetation, while the Cantabrian mixed forests bring moister temperate broadleaf conditions to the far north. The islands are the exception: the Azores temperate mixed forests and Madeira evergreen forests are small, oceanic ecoregions, both classed as imperiled. Gardening splits accordingly - drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants through the center and south, woodland species in the humid northwest, and the islands offering mild, frost-scarce conditions of their own that mainland plant lists do not fully describe.
