Pitcairn Islands

Pitcairn Islands: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Remote even by Pacific standards, the Pitcairn Islands sit within the Tuamotu tropical moist forests, an Oceania-realm ecoregion of tropical moist broadleaf forest classed as imperiled - a status common to small island floras with nowhere to retreat. The ecoregion spans scattered islands across a vast stretch of ocean, and on Pitcairn it means a warm, humid, ocean-moderated climate without real seasons of cold. Growing conditions favor tropical and subtropical broadleaf plants that tolerate salt wind and limited land; the constraints here are isolation and terrain rather than climate. That same isolation is why the native vegetation matters disproportionately - introduced plants have an outsized effect on a flora this small, which is worth weighing in any planting choice.
