Palestine

Palestine: 3 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Palestine sits on the seam between the Mediterranean and the desert. The Eastern Mediterranean conifer-broadleaf forests, an ecoregion classed as imperiled, bring winter-rain woodland conditions to the hill country, while the Arabian desert and the Mesopotamian shrub desert account for the arid eastern and southern ground toward the Jordan Valley and beyond. That makes the climatic story a short, steep transition: mild wet winters and dry summers on the Mediterranean side, then rapidly increasing aridity eastward. Planting follows the same line - pines, evergreen oaks, and classic summer-dry Mediterranean shrubs where the winter rains reach, and genuinely desert-adapted species where they do not - with the boundary between the two often only a ridge apart.
