Norway: 6 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Boreal and arctic biomes shape Norway. The Scandinavian and Russian taiga, an enormous conifer belt of over 830,000 square miles, forms the backbone, while the Scandinavian coastal conifer forests trace the mild, wet Atlantic seaboard and the Sarmatic mixed forests bring temperate broadleaf character to the far south. Above and beyond the treeline sit three tundra ecoregions: the Scandinavian Montane Birch forest and grasslands along the mountain spine, the Kola Peninsula tundra in the far northeast, and the Russian Arctic desert of the high-Arctic islands. The planting picture follows that ladder: hardy conifers and boreal understory plants across most of the country, a richer broadleaf palette in the southern lowlands and along the ocean-warmed coast, and low, wind-tough alpine and tundra species in the mountains and north.
