North Macedonia

North Macedonia: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

North Macedonia straddles the temperate-Mediterranean boundary. The Balkan mixed forests cover most of the country and the Rodope montane mixed forests, a Half Protected ecoregion, reach the eastern mountains, both temperate broadleaf and mixed forest. From the south, two Mediterranean forest, woodland and scrub ecoregions push up the valleys: the Aegean and Western Turkey sclerophyllous and mixed forests, ranked Nature Imperiled, and the Pindus Mountains mixed forests in the west. That gives the country a genuine climatic split within a small area: continental winters and deciduous woodland in the uplands, and hot, dry summers with evergreen sclerophyllous vegetation along the Vardar corridor. Gardeners can plant classic hardy broadleaf trees in the hills while the warm valleys support drought-adapted Mediterranean shrubs and summer-dry perennials.
