Nigeria
Nigeria: 12 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Nigeria runs the full West African moisture gradient across twelve ecoregions. Central African mangroves and the Niger Delta swamp forests line the coast, backed by the Nigerian lowland forests, Cross-Niger transition forests, and Cross-Sanaga-Bioko coastal forests. Northward the tree cover thins through the Guinean forest-savanna and West Sudanian savanna into the Sahelian Acacia savanna, with the Lake Chad flooded savanna in the far northeast and the Jos Plateau forest-grassland and Mandara Plateau woodlands adding cooler upland pockets. A gardener in Lagos and one in Kano are effectively working in different climates: year-round humid tropical planting in the south, drought-paced savanna planting in the north. Most of these ecoregions carry the Nature Imperiled tier, so surviving native forest and savanna species deserve a place in planted ground.
