New Zealand: 12 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Temperate broadleaf and mixed forest supplies nine of New Zealand's twelve ecoregions, from the Northland temperate kauri forests at the warm tip of the North Island down through Nelson Coast, Westland, and Fiordland temperate forests on the South Island's wet western side, out to the Chatham and Rakiura island forests. The drier eastern South Island belongs instead to the Canterbury-Otago tussock grasslands and the New Zealand South Island montane grasslands, with subantarctic tundra on the Antipodes islands. The result is a mild, oceanic gardening climate almost everywhere, wetter in the west and on the ranges, notably drier in the eastern rain shadow - ideal country for evergreen forest species, tree ferns, and, in Canterbury and Otago, tussock and hardy dryland perennials.
