Morocco

Morocco: 8 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Morocco sits on the hinge between the Mediterranean world and the Sahara, and its eight ecoregions show it. Mediterranean woodlands and forests and Mediterranean dry woodlands and steppe cover the north and the Atlas slopes, with Mediterranean conifer and mixed forests and the Mediterranean High Atlas juniper steppe at elevation; the southwest holds the distinctive Mediterranean Acacia-Argania dry woodlands and succulent thickets. South and east the country passes into the North Saharan Xeric Steppe and Woodland, the South Sahara desert, and the Saharan Atlantic coastal desert. Gardening conditions run from classic winter-rain, summer-drought Mediterranean climate to true desert, so summer water is the organizing constraint everywhere; the mountains add winter cold that the coasts never see.
