Montserrat

Montserrat: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Montserrat's roster ecoregion is the Lesser Antillean dry forests, the small tropical dry broadleaf system scattered across the leeward and lowland flanks of the Lesser Antilles. On Montserrat that describes the coastal lowlands, where a marked dry season favors deciduous and semi-deciduous trees, thorny shrubs, and drought-tolerant natives rather than rainforest. The island's steep volcanic interior catches far more moisture, so conditions turn greener quickly with elevation and exposure. For gardeners the dry-forest designation is the planning baseline: warmth is never limiting, but the dry months are, so unirrigated plantings lean on drought-adapted species while thirstier tropicals want the wetter hillsides or a watering regime that carries them through the dry season.
