Montenegro: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Montenegro pairs two ecoregions across a very steep climatic step. The Illyrian deciduous forests, a mediterranean forests, woodlands and scrub unit, hold the Adriatic coast and its immediate hinterland, with mild wet winters and hot dry summers; directly behind them the Dinaric Mountains mixed forests rise into cool, snowy temperate highlands of beech and conifer. Few countries move from mediterranean scrub to mountain forest in so few kilometers. For gardeners that means two distinct palettes: drought-summer mediterranean species near the sea, and hardy temperate broadleaf and conifer plantings in the karst interior, where winters are genuinely cold. The Dinaric forests rate Nature Could Reach Half Protected and the Illyrian forests Nature Could Recover, so both retain meaningful natural cover.
