Mauritania

Mauritania: 8 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Mauritania is written almost entirely in desert. Five of its eight ecoregions belong to the deserts and xeric shrublands biome, led by the vast South Sahara desert and West Sahara desert, with the North Saharan Xeric Steppe and Woodland, the Saharan Atlantic coastal desert along the ocean, and the West Saharan montane xeric woodlands in the uplands. The Saharan halophytics add salt-tolerant flooded ground. Only in the far south does the Sahelian Acacia savanna, and a sliver of West Sudanian savanna, bring a summer rainy season and real tree cover. Planting here means working with extreme aridity: deep-rooted, drought-committed species, shade as infrastructure, and water as the limiting design constraint everywhere north of the Sahel.
