Macau

Macau: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Macau falls within a single ecoregion, the South China-Vietnam subtropical evergreen forests - a tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forest unit classed as imperiled, a status that reflects how heavily settled this stretch of the South China coast has long been. The underlying climate is humid subtropical: hot, wet summers driven by the monsoon and short, mild, drier winters that rarely bring frost. In a territory this urban, planting is mostly a matter of street trees, parks, and balconies, but the ecoregion still sets the palette - broadleaf evergreens, subtropical flowering trees, and humidity-loving ornamentals thrive, while plants needing winter chill or dry summers do not. Typhoon-season wind tolerance is the other practical filter.
