Lithuania

Lithuania: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Lithuania lies on the boundary between two large Palearctic forest ecoregions, both temperate broadleaf and mixed forest. Central European mixed forests reach the south and west of the country, while the Sarmatic mixed forests - the belt that continues northeast into the boreal fringe - cover the rest. The transition is the story: this is where Europe's broadleaf-dominated forests begin yielding to conifer-heavy mixed stands, under a climate of cold winters, mild summers, and dependable moisture. Both ecoregions are assessed as able to recover. For gardeners that means solid cold-hardiness is the baseline; oaks, birches, pines, and spruces all belong here, and the plant palette rewards species comfortable with a short growing season rather than those needing long southern summers.
