Kosovo

Kosovo: 3 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Kosovo sits where the Balkan Peninsula's forest systems converge. The Balkan mixed forests, a temperate broadleaf system, cover the central basins and east; the Dinaric Mountains mixed forests reach in across the high western ranges; and the Pindus Mountains mixed forests, classed with the Mediterranean forests, woodlands and scrub biome, bring a southern influence along the mountain spine. The mix reads as a continental-temperate country with a Mediterranean-leaning edge: cold winters and warm summers in the plains, longer snow cover in the Dinaric uplands, and slightly milder, drier character toward the south. Gardens here rest on hardy deciduous trees and shrubs, with sub-Mediterranean species worth trying in warm, sheltered positions. All three ecoregions sit in recoverable protection tiers, favoring native oak and mixed-forest planting.
