Jersey

Jersey: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Jersey sits within a single ecoregion, the European Atlantic mixed forests, the temperate broadleaf system that traces Europe's ocean-moderated western edge. The island distills that ecoregion's character: mild, damp winters, temperate summers, and a growing season stretched at both ends by the sea, which is precisely the climate behind Jersey's long history of early outdoor crops. For gardeners the maritime moderation means an unusually wide plant palette for the latitude, including borderline-tender species that would fail a short distance inland on the continent. Wind and salt spray are the counterweight, so hedges and walls earn their keep. The ecoregion's mixed broadleaf character, and its Nature Could Recover standing, point toward native trees and hedgerow shrubs as the island's most reliable structural planting.
