Isle of Man

Isle of Man: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

One ecoregion reaches the Isle of Man: the Celtic broadleaf forests, the temperate broadleaf and mixed forest system of Ireland and western Britain, ranked Nature Imperiled. The island shares that region's mild, damp, oceanic character - winters softened by the surrounding sea, cool summers, frequent rain, and persistent wind. The natural cover is broadleaf woodland of the oak-and-ash Celtic type, though as the Imperiled ranking suggests, little old woodland survives anywhere in this ecoregion. For gardeners the climate is forgiving on the cold side and generous with moisture; the real constraints are wind exposure and the modest summer warmth, which favor tough broadleaf trees, hedging, and the lush perennial planting that thrives in maritime conditions over anything needing heat to ripen.
