Hungary

Hungary: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

All of Hungary lies within the Pannonian mixed forests, a temperate broadleaf and mixed forest ecoregion filling the Carpathian Basin, and that single classification is genuinely descriptive. The basin setting gives the country a continental temperate climate, with the natural cover a mosaic of oak-dominated woodland and open steppe-like grassland on the driest ground, which is why the Hungarian plain reads as Europe's westernmost taste of steppe. The ecoregion's Nature Could Recover tier reflects centuries of agricultural conversion. For gardeners the formula is continental: cold winters, hot and often dry summers, and a plant palette anchored on drought-tolerant oaks, steppe perennials, and grasses, with moisture-loving species best reserved for river valleys and irrigated ground.
