Hong Kong

Hong Kong: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Hong Kong falls within one ecoregion, the South China-Vietnam subtropical evergreen forests, a tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forest unit of the Indomalayan realm. The natural cover is evergreen broadleaf forest suited to a humid subtropical climate: hot, wet, typhoon-season summers and mild, drier winters that rarely bring frost at sea level. Centuries of clearance across this ecoregion, reflected in its Nature Imperiled rating, mean much of the territory's hillsides carry secondary shrubland and regrowing forest rather than old growth, with richer forest surviving in ravines and country parks. For gardeners the conditions are generous: nearly year-round growth, ample summer rain, and a palette that spans subtropical evergreens, flowering trees, and many frost-tender species, with wind and thin hillside soils the main constraints.
