Haiti

Haiti: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Haiti holds four ecoregions on its share of Hispaniola, stacked by moisture and elevation. The Hispaniolan moist forests are the largest, cloaking the wetter slopes; the Hispaniolan dry forests take the rain-shadowed lowlands and coasts; the Hispaniolan pine forests, a tropical coniferous system, hold the high mountains; and the small, Half Protected Enriquillo wetlands mark the border lowland. That layering makes elevation the gardener's first question. Coastal and valley gardens work with drought-tolerant tropical dry-forest species, mid-elevations support the lush moist-forest palette, and the cool pine zone grows plants the lowlands never could. With the moist, dry, and pine systems all in recovery-capable tiers, native Hispaniolan trees are a sound backbone for planted ground.
