Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Two Afrotropic ecoregions meet in Guinea-Bissau. The Guinean forest-savanna covers the interior, a transitional landscape of woodland, savanna, and gallery forest with a strong wet-dry seasonal rhythm, while the Guinean mangroves line the deeply indented coast, one of West Africa's most extensive mangrove systems threading the estuaries and Bijagos islands. The pairing gives the country a hot tropical climate with a pronounced rainy season, wetter toward the coast, and a landscape organized around tidal water on one side and seasonal fire-and-drought savanna on the other. Planting inland leans on savanna-adapted trees and crops that ride out the dry months; the coastal fringe belongs to salt-tolerant species. The forest-savanna rates Nature Imperiled, the mangroves Nature Could Recover.
