Guernsey

Guernsey: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Guernsey falls within the European Atlantic mixed forests, the temperate broadleaf and mixed forest ecoregion that runs along Europe's Atlantic seaboard. On a small Channel island, that Atlantic character is concentrated: an oceanic climate with mild, wet winters, cool summers, and a long frost-light growing season moderated by the surrounding sea. This is why Guernsey gardens can carry plants that struggle in continental Europe at the same latitude; the maritime softness widens the palette toward tender perennials and early-season growing, a pattern the island's horticultural tradition reflects. The trade-offs are wind and salt exposure on open ground, making shelter planting a foundation rather than an afterthought. Native broadleaf trees and hedgerow species of the Atlantic mixed forests remain the sturdy backbone beneath the exotics.
