Guatemala: 10 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Ten ecoregions pack into Guatemala, a density that reflects steep mountains meeting two coasts. Five tropical moist broadleaf forests span the Petén-Veracruz lowlands, the Central American Atlantic slope, and the Chiapas and Central American montane belts; the Central American pine-oak forests add a distinctive tropical conifer highland; and the Pacific side dries into the Central American dry forests, the Chiapas Depression dry forests, and the Motagua Valley thornscrub, a small desert-and-xeric-shrubland pocket ranked Nature Imperiled. Southern Mesoamerican Pacific mangroves fringe the coast. Growers here read slope and aspect first: wet Atlantic-facing lowlands and cloud-touched highlands favor moist and montane forest plants, the pine-oak zone behaves almost temperate, and the rain-shadowed Motagua corridor calls for genuinely drought-hardy choices.
