Greece: 6 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Greece sits on the seam between two Palearctic biomes. From the south and the islands come Mediterranean forests, woodlands and scrub: the Aegean and Western Turkey sclerophyllous and mixed forests, the Crete Mediterranean forests, the Illyrian deciduous forests, and the Pindus Mountains mixed forests along the western spine. From the north come temperate broadleaf systems, the Balkan mixed forests and the Half Protected Rodope montane mixed forests on the Bulgarian border. Most Greek gardens therefore live by Mediterranean rules: dry, bright summers that favor sclerophyllous evergreens, herbs, and drought-adapted planting, with winter as the growing season. In the northern mountains the logic flips toward temperate deciduous woodland. The Aegean ecoregion's Nature Imperiled tier is a reminder that native coastal scrub is worth planting, not clearing.
