Germany

Germany: 5 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Every one of Germany's five ecoregions is temperate forest, four of them temperate broadleaf and mixed: the European Atlantic mixed forests in the maritime northwest, the Baltic mixed forests along the northern coast, the Central European mixed forests across the east, and the Western European broadleaf forests through the central and southern uplands. The Alps conifer and mixed forests reach the far south. That uniformity is itself the character: a mild-to-continental gradient running west to east, everywhere naturally wooded in beech-and-oak-country broadleaf forest, with montane conifers only in the Alpine fringe. Gardeners work with a forgiving four-season climate suited to the classic hardy broadleaf trees, shrubs, and woodland perennials, choosing for milder winters toward the Atlantic side and colder, more continental ones toward the east.
